HSA and FSA Accounts

Massage therapy is an eligible expense for most Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), making it easy to prioritize your well-being while using your benefits before they expire.

Some plans allow for automatic reimbursement of wellness services, while others may require a recommendation or prescription from a licensed healthcare provider, especially for conditions like chronic pain, injury recovery, or stress. We recommend checking the details of your specific plan to confirm eligibility and requirements.

Some clients also submit a superbill to their insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. If approved, the insurance reimbursement goes directly to you—even if you paid with HSA or FSA funds. However, this is not universal and could have tax oimplicartions, so again, we recommend checking with your plan and since this can be confusing, here is some sample wording you can use.

Ask your HSA/FSA plan administrator something like this, ““If I pay for a massage therapy session with my HSA or FSA card, and then submit a superbill to my insurance for out-of-network reimbursement, and the insurance reimburses me—does that violate any rules or count as duplicate reimbursement?” 

Ask your health insurance company something like this, “If I submit a superbill for a massage I paid for using HSA/FSA funds, and it qualifies for out-of-network reimbursement, will you still reimburse me directly—or does payment with HSA/FSA disqualify the claim?”
