Why take a workshop

A massage you can give at home

Most people want to help when their partner’s neck is sore or their back is tight after a long week, but don’t know where to start. In a workshop you learn a short set of techniques that feel good to receive and are easy to give, so you can keep using them long after you leave.

You learn by doing. You take turns on the table, and your teacher adjusts your hands, your pressure and your posture until it feels right to both of you.

What you’ll learn

What you’ll practice

  • The basics: positioning, draping and how to check in about pressure
  • Back, neck and shoulders: long, flowing strokes and slow, broad pressure
  • Legs and feet: simple techniques that feel great at the end of the day
  • Body mechanics: how to use your body weight so your hands and wrists don’t tire
  • Your own focus: in a private workshop, you can spend more time on what matters most to you

“We purchased a Two-Hour Private Couple’s Massage Workshop using the Lomi method. This was our first time in such a workshop, so there was potential to feel uncomfortable, but Joe put us at ease. Joe was a great instructor.”The W., February 2025

Questions

Couples massage workshop questions

Do we need any massage experience?

No. Most couples have never given a massage before. We start with the basics: how to position your partner, how much pressure to use, and how to use your body weight so your hands don’t get tired.

What will we learn?

Simple, flowing techniques for the back, neck, shoulders, legs and feet that you can repeat at home. In a private workshop you can also choose what to focus on, such as the neck and shoulders or a full-body sequence.

How does a private workshop work?

It’s just the two of you and your teacher, Joe or Wendy Lavin. You take turns giving and receiving, practicing each technique on each other while your teacher guides your hands and answers questions. You set the pace.

How long is it and how much does it cost?

90 minutes is $300, two hours is $400 and three hours is $500, for the two of you. Everything is included.

What should we wear?

Whatever is comfortable. The person receiving is professionally draped with sheets and towels, and there is a private place to change.

Does it have to be a romantic partner?

No. Friends, family members and partners are all welcome. Workshops are for adults 18 and over.

Where are workshops held?

At any of our three locations: Fremont, Magnolia and Lower Queen Anne. The Lower Queen Anne practice is up one flight of stairs, so choose Fremont or Magnolia if stairs are a problem.

Do you offer group workshops?

Yes. Small-group couples massage workshops, with no more than six couples, are held at our Fremont studio through Power of Touch Workshops. See dates at poweroftouchworkshops.com.

Can we give a workshop as a gift?

Yes. Gift cards can be used for any workshop length and never expire.
